“He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.” – Job 26:7

The Bible shows itself to be scientifically accurate in at least 3 major points in astronomy:

  1. It says that the Earth is suspended in nothing, (Job. 26:7 ).
  2. It says the Existence of ocean currents in the Seas, (Psalm 8:1 ,3 ,6 ,8)
  3. It says the Stars are Innumerable, (Gen. 15:5 ).

I grew up not knowing the bible in this way; I mean, sure, I have been told it is the Word of God, but I don’t remember it ever being considered as a source of scientific facts.

Now that I’m homeschooling my kids with books that have a biblical worldview, my eyes have been opened to ideas such as “young earth theory”, “creation vs. evolution” and the like.

It is very new to me, certainly a lot to be learned and unlearned, especially about evolution — I mean, for 30 years of my life I really believed we humans came from apes. How was I to know any better? That was the only thing taught in schools back then, and its still is generally what is taught until now. (Something needs to be done about this, you know?)

But, there is a time for everything. Thank You Lord for opening our eyes to the truth that is in Your Word!

Salt Play Dough (1 cup flour, 1 cup water, 2 tbsp Cream of tartar, 1 tbsp Baby Oil — cook until sticky) to make the sun, the moon and the earth.

As we play with some clay, we talk about some facts about our solar system, such as how the earth revolves around the sun once a year and also rotates on its axis every 24 hours. I tried my best to explain and illustrate how day turns into the night as the earth spins around its axis.

Then we paint our own galaxies in the bathtub. We used food color mixed in with flour, a little water and some dishwashing liquid.

Washable bathtub paint (mix flour, water, dishwashing liquid and food color) to paint galaxies

It was not only fun; it was a great way to have the kids involved in cleaning the bathroom without them even knowing it. LOL!

Plain old watercolor to paint Comet ISON. Allyra’s comet ISON is the colorful thing with yellow, blue and red stripes.

“And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years.” – Genesis 1:14

Honestly, the real reason for our sudden interest and exploration in astronomy was the news about Comet ISON which is expected to be brightest this coming November 28, 2013.

With all the crazy happenings all over the world (earthquakes, floods, famine, wars — you know, all that stuff in Matthew 24), the Lord is telling us to look to the heavens and understand, these are “signs” that “mark SACRED TIMES.”

God bless us all! 🙂
